Experts said the cold weather would get rid of the stink bugs that invaded so many homes this past summer and fall, but a Shaler homeowner said she found dozens of them inside of her furnace.
Pam Stack said she didn’t know the bugs were even inside of her home until she heard a strange noise coming from her basement a few weeks ago.
“The whole furnace was buckling out like it was going to explode,” said Stack.
Fearing that her furnace was going to blow up, she called a repairman to examine the furnace’s intake and exhaust tubes.
“The repairman told me they went up through the PVC pipe and that is when they got down into the water tubes that go down into the furnace,” said Stack. “It was just filled with stink bugs, pieces of wings and legs and all that stuff.”
This past summer Stack said the back of her house was infested with the bugs.
“There were hundreds of them. They’d dive bomb you when you walked out of the house,” Stack said.
She said when the temperatures began to get cooler the stink bugs began climbing in through every crack and crevice of the house. Stack said after the furnace was cleaned out, she thought the problem was finally over.
“It was fine for like five hours, and then it started over again,” said Stack.
A second visit from the repairman found more stink bugs embedded in the elbow of the furnace pipe. The repairman told Stack that the said the best way to keep the bugs out of her pipes and furnace is to put a stocking around the furnace in the spring.
