Iron Furnace Tour allows residents to experience a little bit of history in their own backyard

On August 14, the Vernon Township Historical Society and Wawayanda State Park sponsored a guided tour of the historic iron furnace and Double Pond Village and the raceways at Wawayanda State Park. Many attended the event to hear Society historian Ronald Dupont Jr. in his guided tour.

The original Iron Furnace, built in 1845, was used to produce iron throughout the years of the Civil War.

Wawayanda Lake dam was opened to show how water flowed through the raceways of the historic iron-smelting town. Once called Double Pond, the lake was dammed in 1846 to provide power for an iron furnace and mills. In the old industrial village, below the dam was the iron furnace, which stands today in its original condition.

The furnace was built by the Ames Brothers toolmakers in 1845. At one time, the furnace was surrounded by buildings, and more than 6,000 acres of timber were cut down to feed it. All that remains today are the foundations and the furnace.

The furnace was used to produce iron through the Civil War.

The Wawayanda Mine is about two miles northeast of the iron furnace near the New York State border and consists of five openings or shafts.

Vernon Township Historical Society historian Ronald Dupont Jr. says, “In its time, Wawayanda was a big operation. It was a little industrial village where quite a few people lived and worked. Once the industry disappeared, the village disappeared with it.”

Wawayanda State Park consists of over 50,000 acres, which includes vast historic, cultural, recreational and natural resources. It also includes more than 60 miles of well-marked trails. Families can come and see the dams opened, enjoy the guided tours of the historic iron furnace and village, and also swim, rent boats or canoes, and picnic for the day.
