Furnaces which are made for use in mobile or manufactured homes have a number of differences from ordinary home furnaces. It is essential to purchase a heating system which is right for your particular home. This must be a system which has been designed specifically for this use. The air ducts are smaller and corners are sharp and tight. As a result air does not flow as freely or as easily as it does in an ordinary home.
Furnaces which are suitable for mobile homes are made by a number of the same manufacturers who make standard furnaces. When you have decided to install a new furnace you must make note that they use a different ratings system than those for a standard home. These furnaces require different installation procedures and have different ducting systems and venting than those found in ordinary homes.
The ducting system, due to the smaller space available, is of smaller dimensions than in an ordinary house. Furnaces made for standard homes cannot be used in mobile homes, and if installed therein unknowingly, the result may be dangerous conditions. A sealed combustion vent system is used by mobile home furnaces. This is totally different from that used in ordinary furnaces.
The heat vents should be installed around the walls. In cold climates this is even more necessary. Air is drawn in from the outside by the sealed combustion unit, and no fumes are vented into the home. Air is drawn in through vents which may be in the outside walls, floor or ceiling. The air intakes and exhausts are well sealed in order to prevent escape of air.
A furnace must be of the correct size for the mobile home it will be installed in. This will of course depend greatly on climatic conditions in the area. A heating system which might be right in an area of warmer climate would usually be too small in a colder climate. An undersized furnace will be forced to work continuously, to heat the home, which results in inefficiency and money wasted. It is absolutely essential to install a furnace which is of the proper rating for the size of the mobile home, and for the climatic conditions in the area. The best way to ensure that this takes place is to get advice from a local heating expert in the area.
