Most people know that a gas furnace can be one of the most energy-efficient types of heating you can have, and the gas furnace is a popular choice among householders for this reason. However, there are some situations where a natural gas supply simply isn’t available, and some people may believe this means a gas furnace is no longer a viable choice. The fact is that the wide range of propane furnaces now available mean a high-efficiency furnace can be sited almost anywhere, with a heat output similar or equal to the natural gas models.
Due to the fact that high-efficiency models are available, installing a propane burner not only means good heating and hot water availability, but also that fuel bills can be cut, and can be at least on a par with other, more standard, heating sources. Many LP furnaces now have an efficiency rating of 95%, which is about as efficient as you can get. This will be the figure stated as the AFUE rating.
In order to increase heat efficiency even further, it can be a good idea to take a look at models that have a variable speed blower. This will enable the heating and air convection to be regulated to a very high degree, therefore cutting back on wastage. Other additions to the propane model include an automatic thermostat for a high degree of heat control, enabling the heat to be turned on and off automatically. As for costs, expect to pay about $1,700 for a 21,000 BTU furnace, enough power to heat a small apartment or small house easily.
Remember, though, that a propane furnace will, like a natural gas model, need to be vented, for which it is a good idea to use a professional heating engineer for installation.
